The members of Brave 600+ on Monday 2nd July was ecstatic with the news of the swearing in ceremony of (five) of their members into the Ogun State Judiciary.

The ceremony which took place in Abeokuta had in attendance the Chief Justice of the State's Judiciary who swore in the newly appointed Magistrates and Presidents of the Customary Courts that consisted of members of Brave 600+ dominating the list.

Whilst felicitating with it's members for the well deserved appointment, the group however encouraged them to stand for the truth at all times and to ensure they discharge their duties without gear and favour.

Brave 600+ is the 2009 law graduates of the prestigious Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye who pride themselves as largest single class of lawyers poised for excellence not only in the law profession but across other fields where their members are currently excelling.

Just few months ago, the group's members also top the list of judicial appointments into the Oyo state's judiciary, where three of it's members made the list.

AMBODE WARNS AGAINST FLOUTING BUILDING REGULATIONS

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday said the government would no longer tolerate flouting of building regulations in the state.

He also stated that there was the need for additional 187, 500 new houses in the next five years to reduce the housing deficit estimated at 2.5 million in the state.

The state governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Oluranti Adebule, said this at the 2016 World Habitat Day organised by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development with the theme, ‘Housing at the Centre’.

Ambode said his administration is focused on resolving the confidence in the building control and supervision process, adding that the challenge of housing deficit and the issue of safety concerns in the building sector was top priority.

RICE IMPORTS REMAIN BANNED THROUGH THE LAND BORDERS

Our attention has been drawn to publications on various online platforms indicating that the Nigeria Customs Service has reversed the ban on Rice importation through the land borders. These reports were attributed to a press interview purportedly granted by the Service Public Relations Officer, Deputy-Comptroller Wale Adeniyi.

2. It has become necessary to re-state the true position in view of the confusion which these online publications may create in the industry. It is even more expedient to provide this clarification given that the fact that the  Service has taken a firm position earlier in the week through a joint press conference with Stakeholders.

3. First, we like to reiterate the position that importation of Rice remains banned through our Land Borders, and we have the commitment of Partner Government Agencies and Stakeholders to enforce this restriction. While this restriction is in force, Rice imports through the Ports are still allowed subject to payment of extant charges.

NIGERIAN CUSTOMS LIFTS BAN ON IMPORTATION OF RICE

Wale Adeniyi, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Customs Service has revealed that the Comptroller-General of the body, Colonel Hameed Ali (rtd), has removed the ban on importation of rice. He also stated in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the import duty payment at land borders has been reintroduced.

 According to him, the restriction used to be applied only at land border stations, adding that all rice imports through land borders by rice traders would attract the prevailing import duty of 10 per cent with 60 per cent levy. “Over the years importation has been restricted to the seaports because border authorities have found it difficult to effectively monitor and control importation of rice. “When the decision to ban it (rice) was taken it was not an effective measure because smuggling of the product thrives with people using different means of conveyance including small trucks, bicycles and even animals – putting them on donkeys and some actually carry it on their heads. “These new measures will be for customs to re-organize their anti-smuggling operations in the border areas and ensure that all those importers through the borders bring their rice through approved routes and pay their extant duty,” he was quoted to have said.

AMBODE ASKS COUNCILS TO SUBMIT 288 ADDITIONAL ROADS FOR CONTRUCTION

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos State governor has directed sole administrators of the 57 councils to submit 288 additional roads (four from each  council) for construction  from 2017.

The Sole Administrator of Igando/Ikotun LCDA, Mr. Samuel Ajayi, broke the news yesterday at the inauguration of Osunba Street and Balogun Olanrewaju Road – two of the 114 roads, The Nation reports.

Mr. Samuel Ajayi, while confirming the receipt of the directive from Ambode, said the development was unprecedented in the history of Lagos.

Meanwhile, speaking through his representatives at the inauguration of some of the roads, Ambode warned residents to resist the temptation to convert any of the 114 roads to venue for commercial purposes or parking lot for abandoned vehicles.

The governor said conversion of the roads to other uses other than for motorists would reduce their lifespan.

AMBODE FLAGS OFF COMMISSIONING OF 114 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ROADS

‎ Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Saturday flagged off a week long commissioning of 114 roads newly constructed in all the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the State, with a pledge to commence the construction of second round of another 114 roads across the State soon. The construction of the inner roads, which is an initiative of the Ambode administration and in fulfillment of his campaign promise, was geared towards massive intervention on access and link roads, boost security and increase the socio-economic well-being of residents of the State.

AMBODE APPROVES #740m TO COMPENSATE LEKKI FREE TRADE ZONE (LFTZ) LAND OWNERS

As part of efforts to douse tension and create a conducive atmosphere for businesses in areas bordering the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ), the Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has approved the release of N740,461,432.00, as compensation to the landowners.

Majorly affected this time are the host communities of the parcel B of the land acquired by the government, comprising Yegunda and Abomiti zones of the LFTZ and the Lekki-Epe International Airport site.

Rotimi Ogunleye, the state commissioner for commerce, industry and cooperatives, who disclosed this at a news conference on Thursday, said by the continuing payment of compensations to the communities, the government was assuring investors currently doing business within the zone and would-be investors of their safety and security.

LANDLORD STABS TENANT TO DEATH

A 35-year-old man, Bright Abraham has been killed by his landlord Gbade Metibemu in the Makoko area of Lagos State, on Thursday.

Lagos Metro gathered that Metibemu stabbed the Abia State indigene with a knife multiple of times, on his chest and neck during a disagreement.

Metibemu reportedly rushed to the Adekunle Police Station to report that his tenant was after him and wanted to kill him.

He was, however, detained at the station when angry neighbours of the deceased went to the station to report that Abraham had died at the hospital where he was taken to for treatment.

A tenant, who identified himself as Christian Nwankwo, said Metibemu was hot tempered, adding that he always fought with his tenants.

CEMENT PRICE RISES BY 44% hitting N2,300 PER BAG

‎Dreams of lower construction costs by prospective homeowners might have become a nightmare, going by fresh increase in the price of cement products by manufacturers.

The development has already triggered a ripple effect in the open market, with prices going up by about 44 per cent in few days.

Investigations revealed that operators under the Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (CMAN) have raised prices of brands by N600 per bag in factories, including additional N100 cost for haulage. This has increased retail prices from N1,600 to N2,300 depending on location. In some areas, prices have shot up to N21,350 or higher.

Members of the CMAN include Dangote Cement Plc, which is emerging as a market leader and has factories in Gboko, Benue State; Obajana, Kogi State; and Ibeshe, Ogun State.

Other are: Lafarge Cement WAPCO Plc; Cement Company of Northern Nigeria Plc; Ashakacem Plc and Cross-River based United Cement Company.

Vice President, Nigerian Institute of Building, Kunle Awobodu, told The Guardian: “This is going to create crisis in the construction sector and bad blood between clients and contractors, as developers will make claims for fluctuations.

‎Following a Direction to the telecommunications service providers in the country, the operators, will from July 1, 2016, activate the DO NOT DISTURB facility which gives subscribers the freedom to choose what messages to receive from the various networks. With this Direction the operators have been mandated to dedicate a common Short Code (2442) which will enable subscribers take informed decisions. Mr. Tony Ojobo, Director of Public Affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in a statement, said this action was taken in order to protect subscribers from the nuisance of unsolicited texts, and therefore a direct regulatory response to the yearnings of the subscribers. By this action, he explained, the Commission has invoked a regulatory provision which had hitherto been overlooked by the operators. Taking cognizance of the broad range of services which include: Banking/Insurance/ Financial Products, Real Estate, Education, Health, Consumer Goods and Automobiles, Communication/ Broadcasting/ Entertainment/ IT, Tourism and leisure, Sports, Religion(Christianity, Islam, others), the Commission directed the operators to give the necessary instructions and clarifications that will enable subscribers subscribe to a particular service/services /none at all.

THREE KILLED IN LAGOS LAND DISPUTE

‎Three men were on Monday murdered by suspected land grabbers in Lagos.
The incident occurred at about 2:00pm at Oriwu, Igbodu in Ikosi Ejirin, Agbowa.

A FEDERAL HIGH COURT ANNULS HIKE IN ELECTRICITY TARIFFS

A Federal High Court in Lagos has annulled the hike in electricity tariffs announced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission(NERC) in 2015.

In his judgement on Wednesday, July 13, the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, described the increase as procedurally ultra vires, irrational, irregular and illegal.

CEMENT PRICES SKYROCKET IN NIGERIA

There are fresh increases in the prices of cement-based products effected recently by the manufacturers.

The prices of cement were recently reduced by Dangote Cement Plc, a leading producer of cement in the country by approximately 40 per cent. The move by the market leader slashed cement prices from about N2, 000 or N1, 850 to a price as low as N1, 350 or N1, 400 and N1000 per 50 kilogram bag.

However, the situation has drastically changed in the second quarter of 2016, as there has been undulating increase in price since the month of May according to The Guardian market research. In locations such as; Egbeda, Igando, Ogba, Agege, Sango, and Ikeja in Lagos area, a bag of cement now sells between N1, 550, N1, 600, N1, 700, N1, 800 and N2, 000 across all brands.

Lagos To Jail Street Hawkers & Buyers From Today - Governor Ambode

The Lagos State Government on Friday said that from July 1, 2016, it would commence a total enforcement against street trading and street hawker banning their activities across the metropolis would take its full course.

Speaking at a live interview session on Television Continental, the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said that the renewed enforcement is in line with Section One of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.

Lagos outlaws Omo-Onile, sets up 5-man task force

Lagos State government on Monday warned that it is set to visit the activities of land grabbers, also known as Omo-onile, in the state with full wrath of the law. The warning was delivered by the government through the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem who said the state is ready to apply the full wrath of the law on anybody caught forcibly taking another person’s land in the state.

Synagogue Contractors Released From Kirikiri Prison

Weeks after they were granted bail by the court, the contractors that handled the construction of the collapsed Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN) building, Akinbola Fatiregun and Oladele Ogundeji, were on Monday 20 June, 2016 released from the Kirikiri Maximum Prisons after meeting all their bail conditions.

The two engineers had been remanded in prison pending trial for alleged manslaughter and criminal negligence, charges levelled against them by the Lagos State Government. Following the ruling of the judge that they be remanded in prison custody, their bail application was filed and subsequently granted, although meeting its conditions took a while due to their stringent nature. Having been released, the engineers are expected to be in court for the continuation of their trial.

Meanwhile, at the resumed trial last week, counsel to defendants cross-examined the witness representing the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NIBRRI) and the Council of Registered Engineers in Nigeria (COREN), Engineer Victor Oyenuga.

Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) pointed out to the witness the fact that there is no proof of any correspondence between NIBRRI and COREN regarding the report of the committee said to have been set up by COREN which suggested structural faults were responsible for the tragic incident.
